American Earth

from Reconciliation & the Mystical Beyonda
written by Seth Bernard
What we once believed to be true
We now know not to be
Founded in genocide
We’re stewards of a catastrophe

This is the American Earth
This is the American Earth

Her majesty’s splendour
It’s beyond our wildest imaginations
In metropolis and in wilderness:
Build trust, earn tenderness

This is the American Earth
This is the American Earth

Stock cars all race at close to the same speed
And the big cups come down to strategy
It’s the skill of the driver and the strength of the team
And it’s which way the wind blows

This is the American Earth
This is the American Earth

Our Granddaddies were railroad men
And coal miners
And nowadays we’re doing away with coal and oil
For the babies and the honeybees

We watch the olympics and the elections from the comfort of our own home or bar
And make comments that they don’t hear
We punch in and punch out and serve and we get serves
And we still get to have our own thoughts, we think

Our families fell apart years ago
But somehow stayed together
Our past mistakes came up in our dreams
And other people’s mistakes came up in our conversations

This is the American Earth
This is the American Earth

And hope alone is not gonna be enough
It’s gonna take hard work and dedication and meditation
We’re gonna have to learn how to be ok when we pray in our own way
And we need an economy that’s built on restoration

This is the American Earth
This is the American Earth
